Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a special treatment performed with a topical photo sensitizer called Levulan or Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA), a special light and molecular oxygen to selectively kill abnormal cells. ALA is a natural substance found throughout your body, as it is a precursor for hemoglobin synthesis. Simply stated, ALA/PDT removes sun damaged pre cancerous skin cells while improving fine lines and blotchy pigment. ALA is also wonderful in treating acne by killing the acne bacteria as well as reducing sebaceous glands, the two things that cause acne. It also works in conjunction with our FotoFacial™ Treatments by possibly reducing the number of treatments needed and removing pre cancerous cells, something that traditional IPL cannot do. ALA reduces pore size and oiliness of sebaceous skin and improves texture irregularities with FotoFacials™ treatments.
